Madrid’s roads will start testing a new radar that measures the emissions of moving vehicles. In just one second it is able to know how much pollutant gases leave the exhaust pipe. In less than a second, this device measures what it is coming out of its exhaust pipes of the vehicles passing in front. It identifies the emissions of each car in real time. The radar has one ultraviolet and one infrared lamps. Thanks to them, it perceives what gases and in what exact quantity each vehicle is emitting. It records CO, CO2, NO2, PM and HC. It records CO, CO2, NO2, PM and HC. Up to the date, tests carried up reveals that one tirth of the high emitters vehicles are new and in warranty. This project will allow to compare real emissions and certified emissions at the moment of manufacturing. Next two and a half years this radar will rotate though Madrid`s roads. It is going to measure the exhaust emissions of 3000 – 5000 vehicles per day. By the moment it is not going to fine, it only records data. Although, after the testing period and reaching all the permissions it could be used to sanction the most polluting vehicles.
