dollars in total economic output Sport and Recreation is a major contributor to
Florida’s economy the activities of Sport and Recreation create over 430,000
jobs and attract more than 13 million out of state and international visitors
to Florida the contributions of Florida’s county and municipal parks and
recreation departments to sport tourism is unparalleled county and municipal
governments provide the maintenance and infrastructure to support the numerous
sporting and recreational activities which occur each year through the state
of Florida tonight we are proud to present the third annual excellence and
sport tourism award in partnership with the Florida sports foundation this award
program recognizes department contributions to the sport tourism
efforts of their community a recipient will be awarded for two categories from
the nomination submitted by Florida’s regional sports commissions these
categories are defined as the mid to large sport market and the small sport
market for the mid to large sport market category we would like to congratulate
Sarasota County Parks Recreation and Natural Resources nominated by Sarasota
County Sports Commission under the leadership of Carolyn Brown the
athletics division of this department proudly employs 54 staff members to
oversee the 113 athletic fields that are regularly utilized by over 100 user
groups day in and day out the department strives to ensure the highest standard
of excellence for the maintenance of its parks and has received various accolades
for such service including the Florida Sports Foundation venue of the Year
award for Nathan Benderson Park Sarasota County siesta key beach has been named
top beach in America by tripadvisor’s travelers choice in 2015
and America’s best beach in 2011 by dr. Beach this site hosted the 2015 yes two
on siesta key beach volleyball tournament which saw dozens of NCAA and
NAIA teams compete drawing a five hundred sixty thousand dollar direct
economic impact over the past year the department has been busy working to plan
and open a new world-class BMX facility which will host UCI world cup races USA
BMX national races serve as an Olympic training facility and more along with
the everyday regular user groups Sarasota County hosted 79 various
sporting events in 2015 bringing in a direct economic impact of more than 33
million dollars to the community this department is continuing to work in
partnership with Sarasota County Sports Commission to continue upgrading its
facility attracting events and training groups to the area and hosting all
levels of sport events this award is being presented by steven rodriguez of
the florida sports foundation we would like to congratulate Sarasota County
Parks Recreation and natural resources
