ONCE AGAIN, THAT CONVENTION IS COMING UP NOVEMBER 28-30 IN WILLIAMSBURG. THE NATIONAL FFA ORGANIZATION HAS ITS ROOTS RIGHT HERE IN VIRGINIA. WE WELCOME TO OUR SHOW THIS WEEK LONG-TIME NATIONAL FFA LEADER DR. LARRY CASE, ALONG WITH JESSE MARTIN OF THE VIRGINIA FFA FOUNDATION. THAT CONVERSATION IS COMING UP NEXT DURING “AG INSIGHTS.” ♪ JEFF: WELCOME BACK EVERYONE, I’M JEFF ISHEE, THIS IS “VIRGINIA FARMING,” AND WE ARE IN BEAUTIFUL WEYERS CAVE, VIRGINIA IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY. IF YOU KNOW ABOUT FFA, THE FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA, AND THIS NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOCUSED ON YOUTH, AND AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION, YOU CERTAINLY KNOW ABOUT FFA. WE HOPE THAT YOU LEARN A LOT MORE ABOUT THIS LOCATION AND ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE FFA DURING THIS EPISODE. IT IS A REAL PLEASURE TO WELCOME DR. LARRY CASE. YOU ARE THE PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL FFA ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, BUT MORE PEOPLE KNOW YOU, LARRY, AS THE OLD OWL. [LAUGHTER] DR. CASE: YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT, AND THAT’S OKAY. JEFF: ALSO, JESSE MARTIN, WHO IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE VIRGINIA FFA FOUNDATION. JESSE, YOU LIVE NEAR THIS COMMUNITY HERE IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY. YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED WITH FFA EVER SINCE YOU WERE ELIGIBLE TO BE INVOLVED WITH FFA. JESSE: YEAH. JEFF: SO WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS TELL THAT STORY. IT ALL STARTED RIGHT HERE TODAY IN WEYERS CAVE, VIRGINIA. THIS LOCATION IS SO HISTORIC, IS — IT IS A SMALL FARMING COMMUNITY. THE ACTUAL FACILITY WE’RE AT, IS THE VALLEY PIKE FARM MARKET, ON ROUTE 11 HERE IN WEYERS CAV ANOTHER HISTORIC FACILITY, AND A WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY. DR. CASE, TELL US ABOUT THE VERY ROOTS OF THE NATIONAL FFA ORGANIZATION. HOW DID IT START? DR. CASE: QUICKLY, THE FIRST — THE JACK OUT OF THE BOX, SO TO SPEAK, WAS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE IN THE SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTY. THAT HAPPENED THROUGH THE FEDERAL BOARD ON VOCATIONAL EDUCATION THROUGH AN AUTHORITY THAT THEY GOT THROUGH CONGRESS IN 1917. WHAT HAPPENED WAS, AS THE AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS PROPAGATED, THAT IS A GOOD AG TERM, ISN’T IT? JEFF: SURE. DR. CASE: ANYWAY, WE HAD A LOT OF DIFFERENT KIND OF CHAPTERS, AND DIFFERENT KIND OF CLUBS STARTING. CORN CLUBS, SOY BEAN CLUBS, WHATEVER, WHATEVER. DAIRY, CATTLE CLUBS, ALL THESE KINDS OF VARIOUS CLUBS, AND THEN THE STATES WOULD START PUTTING THINGS TOGETHER, AND THE 50 STATES STARTED PUTTING THINGS TOGETHER, IT WASN’T MATCHING UP. THE FEDERAL LEADERSHIP SAID, WE NEED TO GET SOME UNIFORMITY, AND STANDARDIZATION IN THIS PROCESS. BE A LOT EASIER TO MANAGE AND A LOT EASIER TO FOCUS. THEY FORMED UP SOME COMMITTEES, AND SO FORTH. VIRGINIA HAD SEEMED TO PROGRESS TO THE POINT, THROUGH THE LEADERSHIP IN THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, I’M SURE, AND THROUGH THE LEADERSHIP AT VIRGINIA TECH, WAS ABLE TO PULL TOGETHER THE FUTURE FARMERS OF VIRGINIA. WHICH IN ESSENCE, AFTER A LOT OF THINKING, AND WORKING TOGETHER WITH THE REST OF THE COUNTRY, THE REST OF THE COUNTY SAID, THE FFV IS WHAT WE NEED TO HAVE, EXCEPT WE’RE GOING TO PUT AMERICA. JEFF: BEFORE THERE WAS EVER AN FFA, THERE WAS A FFV. JESSE, EXPAND ON THAT A LITTLE BIT, THE HISTORY HERE IN THIS COMMUNITY. JESSE: ALSO, THAT’S WHERE WEYERS CAVE COMES INTO PLAY IN FFA’S STORY, IS THAT NEWMAN, GROSECLOSE, SANDERS, AND MAGILL THEY WERE ALL INVOLVED IN EDUCATION, SPECIFICALLY AGRICULTURE EDUCATION. THE STORY GOES, THAT THEY, AGAIN, ALIGNED AND SAID, WE NEED A PROGRAM THAT IS, AT THAT TIME, GOING TO GROW FARM BOYS TO FARM LEADERS. THEY GOT TOGETHER IN 1926, AND PITCHED AROUND THIS IDEA, AND REALLY, IT’S SAID TO BE ABOUT FIVE MILES FROM HERE, OF WHERE WE’RE SITTING RIGHT HERE TODAY, IS WHERE THEY GOT TOGETHER AND DISCUSSED IT. FROM THAT, FUTURE FARMERS OF VIRGINIA WAS BORN. IN VIRGINIA, WE SAY, WE’VE BEEN BELIEVING IN THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE SINCE 1927. [LAUGHTER] JEFF: SO, THERE IS A NATIONAL HISTORIC MARKER, AND IT’S NOT FAR OFF THE INTERSTATE. ANYONE TRAVELING THROUGH THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY ON INTERSTATE 81, YOU CAN LITERALLY GET OFF AT THE WEYERS CAVE EXIT, AND WI A COUPLE OF MILES, YOU CAN SEE THE ACTUAL HISTORIC MARKER WHERE THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE FFA ORGANIZATION. BOY, HAS IT EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS. [LAUGHTER] JEFF: YOU KNOW, WHAT STARTED OFF AS MAYBE A DOZEN OR SO YOUNG BOYS, IS NOW THIS ALMOST GLOBAL ORGANIZATION, CERTAINLY THROUGHOUT NORTH AMERICA, OF OVER 600,000 YOUNG PEOPLE INVOLVED IN AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION. TELL US SOME OF THOSE MILESTONES, IF YOU WILL. DR. CASE: WELL, FIRST OF ALL, WEYERS CAVE WAS THE FIRST CHAPTER IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY. THAT’S WHY WE’RE HERE TODAY, I THINK. I WOULD NOTE TO YOU THAT THE VIRGINIA FFA ASSOCIATION JUST HAD ITS 90TH CONVENTION. GUESS WHAT THE CONVERSION HAS BEEN AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL AT THIS POINT? IT IS 90TH CONVENTION AT THE NATIONAL. THE VIRGINIA FOLKS ARE ABOUT A YEAR AHEAD ON THE CONVENTIONS HELD IN THAT PROCESS. IN TERMS OF EVOLUTION, BACK IN THE DAY, SO TO SPEAK, WE WERE PRODUCTION AGRICULTURE, IT WAS FARMING. IT WAS A REAL SIMPLE MISSION TO TRAIN PROSPECTING FARMERS. THAT WAS THE MISSION. THE FFA WAS TAGGED AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE VOCATIONAL AG PROGRAM AT A LOCAL LEVEL. TODAY, IT’S A BROAD FIELD OF AGRICULTURE. ANYTHING THAT’S RELATED, WE HAVE ENVIRONMENTAL-TYPE INSTRUCTION, LIKE CLEAN WATER. WE HAVE FOOD SAFETY KIND OF STUFF, WE HAVE ANIMAL WELFARE KIND OF STUFF, VETERINARY SCIENCES, HORTICULTURE, FLORICULTURE, AND THE LIST GOES ON. NOT TO LEAVE OUT, THOUGH, THE CORE IS PRODUCTION AGRICULTURE IN TERMS OF WHAT THE INDUSTRY IS ABOUT. WITHOUT THE FARMER, WE JUST DON’T GO ANYWHERE, YOU KNOW? JEFF: JESSE, YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED WITH FFA, AND YOU NOW LEAD THE FFA FOUNDATION HERE I THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA. TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE SKILLS THAT YOU PICKED UP AS A YOUNG MAN. PUBLIC SPEAKING, FOR INSTANCE. I’VE NEVER MET AN FFA STUDENT THAT WASN’T WELL SPOKEN. JESSE: YEAH. JEFF: THEY KNOW HOW TO STAND UP TO A PODIUM, AND DELIVER AN ADDRESS. JESSE: I THINK THAT THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS THAT FFA OFFERS. YOU KNOW, DR. CASE WAS JUST NAMING A FEW, BUT WHEN I LOOK AT MY LIFE, I THINK, AND LOOK AT WHERE I AM IN MY CAREER, AND IN THE PAST THAT HAVE COME TO ME. THE CORE CONSISTENCY OF WHY I AM WHO I AM TODAY, AND WHERE I’M AT, ALWAYS GOES BACK TO MY TIME IN A BLUE CORDUROY JACKET. EXPOSURE TO NOT JUST MAKING THE WORLD AROUND YOU BETTER, BUT MAKING YOURSELF BETTER, AND BEING A LEADER IN AGRICULTURE. LEARNING TO DO, DOING TO LEARN, EARNING TO LIVE, LIVING TO SERVE. IT WAS A PART OF MY LIFE FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL ON, AND REMAINS. WHEN THAT GETS INGRAINED IN WHO YOU ARE AS A YOUNG ADULT, IT MAKES IT A LOT EASIER TO COME OUT IN THE WORLD AND AT THE FOUNDATION, AS WE SAY, LEARN, DO, LIVE, SERVE. JEFF: JESSE, TALK ABOUT A UNIQUE EFFORT THAT YOU STARTED, I BELIEVE, JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO. IT INVOLVES CAR TAGS AND FFA. JESSE: IT’S BEEN A REALLY BIG GROUP EFFORT, AND CONTINUES TO BE. IT’S WORKING WITH THE VIRGINIA DMV, VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES, TO LAUNCH AN FFA LICENSE PLATE TAG. THE PART BEHIND THAT, IS THAT IT WILL GENERATE FUNDS TO PROMOTE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR MEMBERS. THAT, AT THE END OF THE DAY, IS PRECISELY WHAT THE FOUNDATION HAS SET OUT TO DO. LOTS OF US HAVE SPENT TIME IN BLUE JACKETS AND WE’VE GOTTEN A LOT OUT OF THAT EXPERIENCE, AND NOW IT’S FINDING WAYS TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE FUTURE BLUE JACKETS ALSO HAVE THE EXPERIENCES WE HAD AND THEN SOME. SO, YOU KNOW IT HOLDS THE , POTENTIAL OF CREATING $15,000 A YEAR FOR EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, AND WE CONTINUE TO DRIVE TOWARD GETTING 1,000 PLATES ON THE ROAD. JEFF: I’M SURE THAT THERE ARE MANY WAYS THAT INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES, CORPORATIONS, CAN SUPPORT FFA, EVEN AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL. DR. CASE: OH YES, WE HAVE A NATIONAL FFA FOUNDATION AS WELL. THAT CONTINUES TO GROW. I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE WE ARE WITH THE NUMBERS NOW. I’VE BEEN RETIRED FOR A DAY OR TWO, AND I DON’T KEEP UP WITH THAT. [LAUGHTER] DR. CASE: BUT I KNOW I’M CONTRIBUTING TO BOTH FOUNDATIONS. I CAN’T GET BY JESSE WITHOUT GETTING — [LAUGHTER] DR. CASE ANYWAY, THAT’S ANOTHER : STORY. BUT I WOULD SIMPLY SAY THAT MY STORY ABOUT FFA WOULD BE VERY SIMILAR TO JESSE’S. I STARTED AS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL. I ACTUALLY STARTED IN 7TH AND 8TH GRADE AS WELL. WE DID NOT HAVE 7TH AND 8TH GRADE, BUT THERE WERE JUNIOR FFA. I WANTED TO SPEAK TO YOUR POINT ABOUT WELL SPOKEN. PART OF THE PROCESS OF BECOMING A GREENHAND, THAT’S THE FIRST LEVEL OF MEMBERSHIP IN HIGH SCHOOL. IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, IT’S NOW CALLED A DISCOVERY DEGREE. BUT THE GREENHAND, YOU’RE TO RECITE THE FFA CREED FROM MEMORY. THAT’S A BIG CHORE FOR MANY OF US, AND I WAS ONE OF THEM. BUT WHAT IS DOES IS GETS YOU ON YOUR FEET. YOU HAVE TO STAND UP BEFORE A GROUP AND START TALKING, THAT’S JUST THE BEGINNING STEP. JEFF: YOU NEED TO STAND AND DELIVER. DR. CASE: YEAH, EXACTLY. THEN WHEN I WAS IN JUDGING — THEY CALL THEM JUDGING CONTESTS THEN, IT IS NOW CREW DEVELOPMENT, ANYWAY. YOU HAVE TO GIVE REASONS, SO YOU HAVE TO THINK ON YOUR FEET AND DELIVER THAT STORY. I HAVE ONE QUICK STORY ABOUT A PERSON I KNOW THAT WENT THROUGH LAW SCHOOL. IT WAS A YOUNG LADY, AND SHE STOOD UP AND DELIVERED HER FINAL PROJECT, AND JUST BLEW THEM AWAY. THE PEOPLE COME TO HER, HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU LEAN TO DO — LEARN TO DO THAT? MY ANSWER WAS, HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF FFA? [LAUGHTER] DR. CASE: SO IT DOES CARRY THROUGH. THE OTHER THING YOU’LL NOTICE IN MOST CASES — YOU CAN SPOT A FORMER FFA MEMBER IN A MEETING TOO, BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT THE PROPER PROCEDURES FOR CONNECTING — CONDUCTING A MEETING IS. JEFF: THERE’S A LOT OF MEETINGS THAT NEED FORMALITY, RIGHT? [LAUGHTER] JESSE: I’VE BEEN IN SOME OF THOSE. JEFF: JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES REMAINING IN THIS. AGAIN, WE’RE IN WEYERS CAVE, VIRGINIA, THE ACTUAL BIRTHPLACE OF THE NATIONAL FFA ORGANIZATION. THIS DYNAMIC YOUTH ORGANIZATION FOCUSED ON AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION, AND LEADERSHIP. JESSE, SUM UP YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS ORGANIZATION, IN VIRGINIA. WHERE DO YOU SEE US PROGRESSING 10 YEARS FROM NOW? JESSE: YOU KNOW, I THINK THE MISSION AND VISION IN VIRGINIA IS PROBABLY SHARED IN EVERY STATE ASSOCIATION, AND BY THE NATIONAL FFA. WHEN WE LOOK AT THE ROLE THAT FFA IS PLAYING IN TODAY’S SOCIETY, WE’RE IN A MOMENT IN TIME WHERE GENERATIONS OF FARM FAMILIES ARE OLDER THAN EVER, AND WE ARE A VERY, VERY SMALL PART OF THE POPULATION, ABOUT 1.5%. WHEN YOU’RE LOOKING AT THAT, WHEN IT’S SO SMALL, AND YOU’RE FEEDING SUCH A LARGE POPULATION, FOLKS HAVE TO BE WELL-ROUNDED. THAT’S WHERE WE’RE SETTING, AND WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT. WE’RE ROUNDING OUR MEMBERS TO GO OUT AND SERVE THIS TINY, TINY POPULATION OF PEOPLE THAT EVERYBODY IN THE UNITED STATES, AND MANY COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD, DEPEND ON TO EAT THREE TIMES A DAY. IT’S NOT OUT IN THE FIELD, MIKING COWS AND EVERYTHING IN EVERY CASE, BUT WE HAVE TO BE GOOD AT MANY THINGS. WE HAVE TO BE GOOD AT SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, MATH, ENGINEERING. THIS INDUSTRY NEEDS GREAT LEADERS, AND WE NEED THOSE LEADER IN BLUE JACKETS. JEFF: DR. CASE, YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED FOR A LONG, LONG TIME. I WON’T ASK YOU EXACTLY HOW LONG, BUT IT’S BEEN MORE THAN A COUPLE OF YEARS. WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS ORGANIZATION? DR. CASE: I HAVE TO TELL YOU, I THINK AGRICULTURE EDUCATION IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL IS THE BEST CURRICULUM THAT CAN BE TAUGHT. THAT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN ALL OF THE STUDENTS. WHEN I WAS TEACHING I ALWAYS SAID, “I TEACH THE WHOLE PERSON.” WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT IS, WE’VE GOT TO GIVE THESE STUDENTS CONFIDENCE IN THEMSELVES, FIRST. THEN YOU CAN BUILD ON THAT, BECAUSE — AND HOW YOU DO THAT IS THROUGH THE ACTIVITIES OF THE FFA. I MEAN, WHEN YOU HAVE TO STAND AND GIVE REASONS, THAT BUILDS CONFIDENCE. WHEN YOU HAVE TO STAND AND GIVE A PUBLIC SPEECH, THAT BUILDS CONFIDENCE. WHEN YOU HAVE TO LEAD A GROUP OF PEOPLE, THAT GIVES CONFIDENCE. MY VISION WOULD BE WE WILL CONTINUE DOING THAT, NO MATTER WHAT THE CONTEXT OF THE TECHNICAL SIDE THAT WE WILL BE TEACHING. WE KEEP TEACHING KIDS HOW TO BE THEMSELVES AND BE THEIR BEST SELVES, THEN WE CAN GIVE THEM THE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE TO GO GET A JOB. JESSE: THAT’S ABSOLUTELY THE VALUES. JEFF: THERE’S SO MANY WAYS THAT YOU CAN MEASURE SUCCESS. YOU CAN SAY, OH, IT GREW FROM A DOZEN YOUNG KIDS IN WEYERS CAVE, VIRGINIA, TO AN ALMOST GLOBAL ORGANIZATION OF OVER 600,000. BUT YOU ALSO CAN MEASURE SUCCESS BY LEADERSHIP. THERE’S A LOT OF LEADERS ALL OVER THIS COUNTRY THAT HAVE THEIR ROOTS IN FFA, AND THEREFORE HAVE THEIR ROOTS IN WEYERS CAVE, VIRGINIA. REAL PLEASURE TO HAVE YOU GUYS ON THE PROGRAM TODAY, AND I HOPE THAT OUR VIEWERS AT HOME HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THIS DYNAMIC YOUTH ORGANIZATION. JESSE, A WEB ADDRESS IF PEOPLE WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT VIRGINIA FFA, THE FOUNDATION AND MAYBE HOW THEY CAN SUPPORT THAT. WHAT WOULD THEY DO? JESSE: IT’S VERY SIMPLE, THEY CAN JUST GO TO SUPPORTFFA.ORG. JEFF: ALL RIGHT, AND DR. CASE? DR. CASE: THE NATIONAL IS FFA.ORG, AND YOU CAN GET INTO A LOT OF GOOD THINGS THERE. JEFF: I TELL YOU WHAT, IT’S SUCH A GREAT ORGANIZATION, AND I KNOW THAT THEY DO DESERVE YOUR SUPPORT. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR BEING ON OUR PROGRAM TODAY. JESSE: THANKS. IT CAN BE USED FOR A LOT OF THE SAME THINGS AS THE PICK, CHOPPING AND CUTTING AND DIGGING IN THAT REGARD. CHRIS: I LIKE THESE. WHAT ARE SOME OTHER STOCKING STUFFERS YOU MIGHT HAVE? CHARLES: WELL, ONE STOCKING STUFFER IS THE FAMED LESCHE DIGGING TOOL. IT’S GOT A GREATER AMOUNT OF LEVERAGE BECAUSE OF THE OFFSET DESIGN. IT’S GOT SERRATED TEETH FOR CUTTING THROUGH ROOTS. IT IS A GREAT TOOL FOR DIGGING OUT DANDELION ROOTS, FOR USING AS A PLANTING TOOL. THIS IS A REALLY GREAT TOOL. IT HAS ITS OWN CASE WITH IT SO YOU CAN PUT IT ON YOUR BELT AND CARRY IT AROUND THE GARDEN. THAT’S A GOOD ONE THERE. CHALRES: IT’S A GREAT TOOL. I USE IT ALL THE TIME. CHRIS: I’M ALSO LIKING WHAT YOU’VE GOT UP HERE IN FRONT. A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT IS. FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS I KIND OF REALIZED MYSELF WHAT THEY ARE. TELL ME, WHAT IS THIS THING? CHARLES: THIS IS A BROADFORK. IT IS OF EUROPEAN INFLUENCE. BASICALLY WHAT YOU’VE GOT IS A U-BAR DIGGER, WHICH IS ANOTHER WORD FOR IT. IT’S GOT TWO HANDLES, AS YOU CAN SEE. BASICALLY, THE WAY TO USE IT IS YOU PUT A LITTLE WEIGHT ON IT AND YOU ROCK IT. IT SINKS DOWN IN THE SOIL AND YOU PULL IT BACK AND CULTIVATE YOUR BED IN THAT WAY. ONCE YOU GET GOING, EVERYTHING IN FRONT OF IT IS LOOSENED AND IT BECOMES EASIER TO DO. AND EVEN IN HEAVY, COMPACTED SOIL — YOU COULD GO ABOUT A FOOT A MINUTE EVEN IN REALLY, REALLY IN HARD CLAY. YOU CAN ALSO USE IT TO CHOP WITH AND LOOSEN THE SOIL. WHAT WE DISCOVERED WITH THE USE OF A BROADFORK, AS COMPARED TO ROTARY-TILLING LIKE WITH A TILLER, THE SOIL STAYS PLIABLE AND UN-COMPACTED FOR A LONGER TIME. CHRIS: MIGHT NOT GET AS MUCH COMPACTION AT THE TOP USING A BROADFORK. CHARLES: THAT’S RIGHT. WHEN YOU LOOSEN THE SOIL, THE WHOLE AREA INSIDE WHERE THE FORK HAS LOOSENED, STAYS LOOSE FOR CONSIDERABLY LONGER. CHRIS: WELL FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT TOOLS, YOU CAN CONTACT YOUR LOCAL COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE. YOU CAN TALK TO YOUR MASTER GARDENER THERE AND FIND OUT WHAT SOME OF THEIR FAVORITE TOOLS ARE.
